In 1975, Smokey Thompson found an ad in Popular Mechanics: "Be a Locksmith, Make Big Money.” He had a great job but thought he could make some extra money with his hobby. He studied for a year and completed his locksmith course. He began his business with a key machine and a cigar box filled with keys.
Soon his business became mobile. A friend encouraged Smokey to open a shop. He invested $1,500 for supplies and a 20’x20’ space. He and his wife, Darlene, began their business.
Darlene was the brains and handled the financials. Smokey never stopped taking classes and attending trade shows and seminars throughout Nevada and California.
When their daughter, Kimberely, was old enough, she joined the team to handle the billing. She married Ronnie Rehn, who joined them as a locksmith. It truly was a family business.
Smokey Key Service is a full-service locksmith shop with the most modern locks and equipment and the largest selection of safes and keys in the tri-county area.
Smokey Key Service provides residential and commercial services, including setting up master key systems. Our mobile van makes Smokey Key Service a complete lock shop on wheels.
